Loot

Game Systems

Loot is a tactical, competitive dungeon crawler where players immerse themselves in the lore of their character, starting with a bare inventory in an empty dungeon and building an awesome adventurer with compelling equipment and items. But beware, a powerful guardian and its minions watch over the treasure buried within and will protect it at all costs.

Highlights:

  • Worked with 4 other artists and designers
  • Fully functional physical board game
  • Over 40 unique items with custom hand-drawn art
  • Unique 4v1 mixed with free-for-all gameplay

My Role:

  • Own the item cards from concept to production
  • Contribute to the layout and design of the game board
  • Work closely with 4 other designers to integrate the items with the other game mechanics and guardian abilities
Weapons range from Common to Legendary and their attributes reflect their rarity while maintaining balance
Defense items span the same rarity as weapons, however all defense items of the same rarity have the same stats to keep players on a more level playing field
A variety of other items give players different combat and movement bonuses or cause traps to be sprung

Game board

While I didn't do the final design of the game board, I did contribute to the overall layout, stressing some key things

  • There should be a lot of chests around the map so a player is always close to picking up a new item - the game is called Loot after all!
  • Some areas of the board need to open up a bit to allow more free movement or afford a place for fighting to break out
  • It should be easy to exit the dungeon once you've looted the Guardian spawn's chest

Playable characters

I did not design the playable characters but collaborated with the other designers to make sure character mechanics and stats aligned with the items and all Health, Armor, Attack, and Range values were balanced.

All of the non-Guardian characters share the same starting stats for weapons and defense. They differentiate themselves throughout the game by picking up and equipping Loot items.
Guardians each have unique abilities and their own summons that they can use during a game. It was important to really differentiate the Guardians from each other since they can not use the items like the non-Guardians. Each ended up having a different playstyle and every game felt different.
